The effects of age, language ability, and type of tasks on preschooler\'s understanding of deception

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of age, language ability, and type of tasks on preschooler’s understanding of deception. To achieve the goal of study, there were considered the main effects of age, language ability, type of tasks and interaction effects among age, language ability, and type of tasks on the scores of preschooler’s understanding of deception. One hundred twenty 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds were divided into two group according to language ability in each age group, and then, were given language- intermediated-deception task and action-intermediated-deception task. The results of this study were as follows; First, The score of task of 5-year-olds was higher than that of 4-year-olds in understanding of deception. The score of task of 4-year-olds was higher than that of 3-year-olds in understanding of deception. Second, the score of deception understanding in the action-intermediated-task was higher than that of in the language- intermediated-task. Third, for the 4-year-olds, there was interaction effect of deception between level of language ability and type of tasks. These results imply that the variables of language ability and types of task depending on age are critical to make sense on preschooler\'s understanding of deception.
