The Relationships between Childhood Emotional Maltreatment and Adolescent Suicidal Ideation: The Mediating Effects of a Traumatized Self-System and Depression

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among childhood emotional maltreatment,adolescent suicide ideation, a traumatized self-system, and depression. Structural equation modelinganalysis was conducted using self-report data from 366 adolescents (168 male and 198 female). Thefindings of this study were as follows. First, childhood emotional maltreatment had an indirect effecton suicidal ideation through a traumatized self-system or depression. Second, double-mediation effectsof a traumatized self-system and depression between childhood emotional maltreatment and adolescentsuicide ideation were also significant. This study proved that a traumatized self-system, a relativelynew concept just introduced in previous studies, was a significant predictive factor for suicideideation, serving as an intervening varable of developing suicidal ideation among adolescent who hadsuffered emotional maltreatment. Based on these findings, effective intervention strategies werediscussed for individuals who experienced emotional maltreatment as children and for those who areexperiencing difficulties in with adolescent suicide ideation.
