A Study of a Character Education Plan According to Character Levels and Requirements for College Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze character levels and educational requirements based on themain pillars of the ‘Character Education Promotion Act (2015)’ as it pertains to college students.The character levels of college students were assessed by the scale developed by Lee et al. (2013).The college students’ educational requirements for courtesy, filial piety, honesty, responsibility,respect, thoughtfulness, communication, and cooperation, stemming from the main pillars of the‘Character Education Promotion Act’ were examined. The operational test was administered to 412college students. By extension, data were analyzed using reliability test, t- test, and F-test. In aneffort to calibrate the character levels, the results displayed significance differences depending on theseniority of the grade in the cognitive and behavioral domains, whereas no significance differenceswere found in the affective domains. In the behavioral domains, seniors showed lower grades. Withthe exception of thoughtfulness, seniors reported higher levels of educational requirements forcourtesy, filial piety, honesty, responsibility, respect, communication, and cooperation than 1st and 2ndyear students.
