Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of character on the relationshipbetween the early childhood home environment and self-regulation. Data were collected from mothersand teachers of children aged from three to five in kindergartens and public child-care centers inDaejeon, Korea. The data were then analyzed using multiple regression and structural equationmodeling. According to the results, there was a correlation among early childhood homeenvironment, character, and self-regulation. The early childhood home environment influencedself-regulation through the character of young children. Also the early childhood home environmentinfluenced self-regulation. The Sobel formula also indicated that this relationship was mediated bycharacter. Thus, character had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the earlychildhood environment and self-regulation. This study demonstrated that young children’s characters, along with their home environments, suggested to play an important role in developing andimproving competence in relation to early childhood self-regulation.
