Mediating Effects of Mattering on the Relationship between Adult Attachment and Interpersonal Relationship Ability

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship among adult attachment, mattering and interpersonal relationshipability of an employee. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating effects of the mattering on therelationship between adult attachment and interpersonal relationship ability. The subjects of this researchexercise were 313 employees. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation and the Baron andKenny(1986) mediating effect analysis. The results were as follows. First, adult attachment was negativelyassociated with mattering and interpersonal relationship ability and mattering was positively associated withthe interpersonal relationship ability of employees. Second, mattering had a perfect mediating effect on therelationship between attachment anxiety and interpersonal relationship ability of employees. Third, matteringhad a partial mediating effect on the relationship between attachment avoidance and the interpersonalrelationship ability of employees. In conclusion, a program to enhance the employee's mattering should bedeveloped and implemented. In addition, training programs and counseling services for employees weresuggested and implications for future researches were discussed.
