The Effects of Developmental Changes in Children’s Resilience on Social Competence

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental changes of children’s resilience from firstgrade to fourth grade and the effects of these developmental changes on fourth grade children’s socialcompetence. The participants comprised about 300 pairs of seven year-old children and their mothers. Theresilience of children and their mothers were repeatedly measured for four years once every year andchildren’s social competence was measured at fourth grade. Latent growth modeling was used toinvestigate the developmental changes of resilience and the effects of the developmental changes ofresilience on fourth grade children’s social competence. According to the results, there were individualdifferences in children’s resilience in the first grade. The rates of change in the four years of children’sresilience were statistically significant and the differences in this rate of change were observed. Next, thechildren’s resilience in the first grade positively influenced their social competence’s subdivisions such associability, social participation, initiativeness and popularity in the fourth grade, but did not have an effecton interpersonal adjustment. The rates of change in children’s resilience for four years did not have aneffect on any of the subdivisions of social competence. This finding suggests that children’s resilience inthe first grade can help their social adjustment afterward.
