A Study on the Somatic Symptoms of Youth-Related Variables - Individuals, Parents, and Social Relationships -

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of personal characteristics (sex, depression, socialwithdrawal), parental characteristics (parenting behavior), and social relations (peer relationship, teacherrelationship) on somatic symptoms. This study analyzed 2,119 children in the 4th grade in elementaryschool and 2,080 adolescents in the 1st grade in high school by using the fourth-year panel data(2013) ofthe Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). The collected data were analyzed using Pearson'scorrelation coefficients and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 23.0. The results are as follows. First,the somatic symptoms of children and adolescents were related to individual characteristics, parentingbehavior, and social relations, and showed the highest correlation with individual variables. Second, thevariables affecting the somatic symptoms of children were depression, social withdrawal, parentalconsistency, abuse, and teacher relationship. For adolescents, sexuality, depression and social withdrawal,parental supervision and abuse affected the somatic symptoms. The results of this study can be used asbasic data to provide guidance for the counseling of children who complain about somatic symptoms atschool and at home.
