Development and Validation of the Basic Life Habits Inventory for Korean Elementary School Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Basic Life Habits Inventory for Korean elementary school students. The subjects were 374 children in Seoul. The data were analyzed respectively by Cronbach Alpha, split-half reliability, test-retest reliability, and descriptive statistics, Pearson\'s product moment correlations and exploratory factor analyses. The results of the analyses were as follows: 1) The preliminary Basic Life Habits Inventory was consisted of 14 subconstucts: Greeting, language, discipline, faithfulness, honesty, cleanliness, self-independence, responsibility, organization, frugality, health, filial piety, rule observation, and patriotism. 2) Content validity and social validity were confirmed by two groups of experts. Construct validity of the Basic Life Habits Inventory was supported by factor analyses. From the results, seven new constructs emerged: ‘Order-manners’, ‘organization’, ‘faithfulness and responsibility’, ‘manners’, ‘health’, ‘cleanliness’, and ‘self-independence’. 3) Reliability of the Basic Life Habits Inventory was examined by using Cronbach Alpha, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability. According to the results, reliability of the Basic Life Habits Inventory components ranged from .675 to .922 and the statistical index can therefore be considered large.
