Influence of Environmental Risk Factors and Ego-resiliency on Adolescents\' Risk Behaviors

Abstract

This study examines the influence of environmental risk factors and ego-resiliency on adolescents\' risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking and violence. The categories of potential risk factors were family, school and peer factors; the high level of ego-resiliency was expected to reduce engagement in risk behaviors. In 2005, 2,271 9th～11th graders of four urban and two rural regions across the country participated in the survey. The results revealed difference in levels and types of risk and protective behaviors within socio-demographic groups. Family conflict and peer group characteristics had effect on all three risk behaviors. Effects of predictors on each risk behaviors varied; peer group characteristics were the most significant on drinking and violent behavior; Abuse experience was on smoking.
