Intrapersonal Moderating Variables on the Influence of Peer Conformity to the Bullying Behavior

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify dangerous routes by which peer conformity causes the bullying behavior and to clarify moderating intrapersonal variables which control the routes. The subjects were 478 5th and 6th grade school children in Seoul and Kyŏnggi, Korea. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, peer conformity was positively related to bullying behavior in male and female students. Second, through moderating effects on the relationship between peer conformity and bullying behavior, self esteem, internal locus of control, empathy, self control are protective factors which lower bullying behaviors in girls. The results of the study indicate the connection between peer conformity and bullying behavior as well as the effect of intrapersonal moderating variables on the influence of peer conformity on bullying behavior in girls.
