An Exploratory Study on Adolescent Stepchildren\'s Adjustment Process in Stepfamilies

Abstract

This study investigates the process of adolescent children\'s adjustment in stepfamilies. Data were collected from nine adolescent stepchildren in Seoul, Korea through in-depth interviews. The main results of this qualitative study provide the following insights about adolescent stepchildren: 1) they encounter certain difficulties; 2) they possess coping resources for overcoming crises, such as religion, support of friends and teachers, and the age of children at remarriage; and 3) they express feelings about the change in family relationships. Based on the results of this study, recommendations for the future research on the subject of adolescent stepchildren were discussed.
