The Relationship between Personality Types, Creative Problem Solving Abilities and the Creative Personal Traits of Children

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to examine the differences in creative personal traits(personality, thinking disposition, motivation disposition) and creative problem solving abilities, according to the personality types of elementary school students who were classified by MMTIC. In this study, the personality types consisted of two groups, which can be further categorized into four preference tendencies (E-I, S-N, T-F J-P) and four temperament types (SJ, SP, NF, NT). The subjects were 199 elementary school students in the 6th grade. To assess their levels of creative achievement, a creative problem solving task was carried out and their products were judged by a panel of 4 experts. The children\'s creative personal traits (personality, thinking and motivation disposition) were assessed according to the CIS (Creative Inventory for Young Students). The data was then analyzed by correlation analysis and MANOVA. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the preference tendency groups of N(intuition) and P(Perceiving) significantly correlated with novelty, resolution and elegance & synthesis of creative problem solving. It was revealed that the NF(intuition/feeling) and NT(intuition/thinking)groups (which prefer the use of intuitional cognition) operated on a higher level of creative problem solving. Second, the preference tendency groups of E(extroversion), N(intuition) and P(Perceiving) showed significant correlation in creative personal traits, which are composed of personality, thinking and motivation disposition. It can be said, therefore, that the groups of NF(intuition/feeling) and NT(intuition/thinking), which prefer the use of intuitional cognition, exhibited more creative traits. In conclusion, it was found out that there was a significant difference in creative personal traits and creative achievement of children according to their personality types.
