A study on the development of self-esteems in children from single-parent families-A comparison with two-parent families-

Abstract

This study investigated the differences between the levels of self-esteem seen in children from single-parent families and that of the levels of self-esteem seen in children from two-parent families, In addition, the effects of economic levels, degree of attachment to parents, and levels of academic achievement upon the self-esteem of children from single-parent families and two-parent families according to age were also analyzed. The participants were elementary school, middle school, and high school students taken from data from the KYPS (Korea Youth Panel Survey). The results were analyzed in the following ways; by frequencies, independent sample t-test, Pearson correlations, and through multiple regression analysis. Our results were as follows: (1) The differences of levels of self-esteem between the two groups were not significant in all age. (2) For children from two-parent families, academic achievements and attachment levels to parents greatly influenced the self-esteem levels of children in regular sequence, but, for children from single-parent families, the level of attachment to parents or economic levels most strongly influenced the self-esteem of children in elementary school, Academic levels of achievement and attachment levels to parents influenced the self-esteem of children in middle school, whereas academic achievement by itself influenced the self-esteem of children in high school.
