The externalization of problem trajectories and parenting in victimized children in terms of the mediating effects of self-esteem

Abstract
Through an analysis of four-time period longitudinal data, this study examined the individual differences in victimized children\'s self-esteem and the externalizing of the changes occurring within problems. Additionally, the influences of parenting on the changes within victimized children\'s self-esteem, and the influences of these changes in self-esteem upon externalizing these changes in problems were investigated. The participants were 504 (boys 302, girls 202) victimized children from the 2004 (4th graders)-2007 (7th graders) panel data of the Korea Youth Panel Survey. The results were analyzed by means of multivariate latent growth modeling. The results were as follows: (1) Individual differences of victimized children\'s self-esteem and externalization of changes in problems were significant. (2) Parenting influenced both the initial levels and slopes of victimized children\'s self-esteem. (3) The changes in self-esteem mediated the associations between parenting and externalizing problems in victimized children.
