Differences in Middle and High School Adolescents’ Self-disclosure and Information Management Strategies with Parents and its Relationship to Parenting Behavior

Abstract

Differences in middle and high school adolescents’ self-disclosure and strategies for informationmanagement with parents and its relationship to parenting behavior were examined in prudential,multifaceted, and personal domains. Participants consisted of 109 male and 131 female students. Anobligation to disclose, actual disclosure about their activities to parents, justifications for nondisclosure,and strategies for information management were measured by self-disclosure questionnaire. Maternalsupport, behavioral control and psychological control were measured by parenting behavior scale. Theresults were as follows. First, middle school students felt more of an obligation to disclose than highschool students only in the prudential domain. Second, middle school students disclosed more thanhigh school students in all three domains. Third, adolescents justified nondisclosure in terms ofparental disapproval in the prudential domain and personal choices in the other two domains. Fourth,adolescents mostly used the strategy of telling if they were asked. Fifth, maternal support andbehavioral control showed positive correlations with obligation to disclose, actual disclosure, and theuse of the strategies of telling all and telling if asked. However, psychological control showednegative correlations with obligation to disclose, actual disclosure, and the use of the strategy oftelling if asked only in the personal domain. This study provided the basic information about middleand high school adolescents’ self-disclosure and strategies for information management with parentsand found that Korean adolescents' self-disclosure and information management with parents werefairly consistent with those of adolescents from other countries.
