The linking of infant responses to the SF paradigms at 6 months and social-emotional behaviors at 15 months

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between infant responses to the still-face paradigm at 6 months and social-emotional behaviors at 15 months. The participants consisted of 36 mothers-infants couples, recruited from Seoul and Gyeonggi province. At 6 months, the infants and their mothers participated in the still-face paradigm, and then at 15 months, the mothers rated the behavior characteristic of their infants by means of the TBC(Toddler Behavior Checklist, 1989). The infants\' response at the still-face paradigm were categorized by 3 responses: the positive response, the negative response and self-soothing behavior. The differences in the still-face response and the mothers\' rate of their infants\' social-emotional behaviors characteristics were analyzed using the Nonparametric test(Mann-Whitney test). The results revealed that the infants who had exhibited social-emotional behaviors more responded less positively at the SF paradigm than who had responded less. The results of our study indicate that infant responses to the SF paradigm may reflect important developmental factors and bring about differences in toddlers‘ social-emotional behavior.
