The Effect of Children’s Temperament and Parent’s Emotion-related Socialization Behaviors on the Child’s Theory of Mind

Abstract

The major purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a child’s temperament and parent’s emotion-related socialization behaviors on the child’s theory of mind. A total of 173 children at the ages of 4, 5, and 6 were enrolled in theory of mind tasks and their parents responded to the questionnaires. For data analysis, we used frequency, Cronbach’s α, One-way ANOVA, the Scheffé test, partial correlation coefficients, hierarchical analysis. The results are summarized as follows. First, children’s shyness and aggression were correlated with the theory of mind. Second, there was a significant correlation between mother s and father’s emotion-related socialization behavior and the theory of mind. Third, child’s temperament and parental emotion-related socialization behaviors influencing the child’s theory of mind were revealed by the child’s shyness, mother’s negative emotional expressions, emotional responses, and emotional guidance. Fourth, father’s positive and negative emotional expressions, and emotional responses influenced the child’s theory of mind. These results could be used to establish and practice parent’s strategies for raising the level of the child theory of mind.
