The Relationships between Adolescents\' Maladaptive and Adaptive Perfectionism and Worry: The Moderating Role of Problem-Solving Confidence

Abstract
This study examined the relationships between adolescent’s gender, perfectionism, problem-solving confidence and adolescent’s worry. The moderating role of problem-solving confidence was also examined. The subjects were 394 high school students(208 boys; 186 girls). Data were collected through adolescents’ self-reported questionnaires and analyzed by correlations and hierarchical regressions. Our results indicated that both maladaptive perfectionism and problem-solving confidence independently predicted the levels of worry in boys, whereas only maladaptive perfectionism predicted the levels of worry in girls. Furthermore, problem-solving confidence moderated the negative effect of perfectionism upon boys’ worry in particular. However, adaptive perfectionism predicted independently neither boys’ worry nor girls’ worry. The sex differences in the relationships between perfectionism and worry and in the moderating role of problem-solving confidence were also discussed.Key words : worry, maladaptive perfectionism, adaptive perfectionism, problem-solving confidence, adolescents
