Levels of Acceptance of Violence by Parents and the Effects on their Children’s Experiences of Bullying

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the paths of related variables that exert an influence upon the increase of experiences of school violence, especially effects of levels of acceptance of violence of their parents. The data was taken from a survey which was conducted upon middle school students and their parents in the Seoul area, and 597 matched cases were used for analysis. Based on preceding research exercisesthe research model was composed and analyzed through structural equation modeling. The results are as follows: the levels of acceptance of violence by parents directly influenced the level of accepting violence by their children and also did so indirectly through parenting behavior and parent-child bonding. Moreover, the levels of acceptance of violence of children influenced theirexperiences of school violence. From these results, various theoretical and practical implications for social work practice focusing on improving school violence prevention program were discussed. In particular, programs aimed at decreasing the levels of acceptance of violence on the part of parents are most urgently needed.Key words : school violence, level of accepting violence, bullying
