Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal parenting stress, parenting behavior and levels of school readiness in preschool children. The participants of this study were 114 mothers and teachers in Seoul and Kyounggi-do. The data were analyzed using Cronbach's , frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, t-tests, Pearson's product moment correlations and stepwise multiple regression analyses. The main results were as follows: Significant gender differences were found in terms of levels of school readiness, but maternal parenting stress or parenting behavior did not differ significantly different through child gender. Children's school readiness levels were related to maternal parenting behavior and parenting stress. Maternal parenting behavior in terms of the setting of limits and intimacy was positively associated with children's levels of school readiness. However, maternal parenting stress in regards to learning expectations was negatively associated with children's school readiness. Among the various influences of maternal parenting behavior and parenting stress as they impact upon levels of children's school readiness, maternal limit-setting behavior was able to account for 9% of the variance in children's levels of school readiness.Key words : Multicultural Family, Maternal Parenting Stress, Parenting Behavior, School Readiness.
