A Study on Cognitive Characteristics of Relationally Aggressive Adolescents

Abstract

This study investigated the cognitive characteristics of relationally aggressive adolescents in their peer relationships. The subjects of this study were 60 girls and 60 boys in elementary and junior high school in Seoul. Their age range was 13 to 16 years old. Social information processing was assessed by Measure of Social Information Processing; normative belief about relationally aggressive behavior was assessed by Modified Normative Belief about Aggression Scale; and peer nomination for relationally aggressive adolescents was assessed by Peer Nomination Instrument. The ANOVA tests revealed 1) differences between relationally aggressive adolescents\' and normal adolescents\' in all factors of social information processing and 3 factors of normative belief about relationally aggressive behavior; 2) significant within group differences in 2 factors of normative belief about relationally aggressive behavior in the relationally aggressive adolescents\'; 3) a significant interaction effect between gender and age in 1 factor of social information processing.
