A Review of Only Child Studies in Korean Journals

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the current trends in research on only child studies in Korean Journals. 112 studies published up until 2011 were analyzed in terms of research publication, methods, themes, and results. Our results indicated that the number of studies on the only child phenomena increased considerably in the first decade of the 21th century. Most of the studies examined collected data using survey methods from preschool children and single informants as well as multiple informants were used to evaluate the measures. ANOVA, t-test, regression analyses were the most frequently used methods of analysis. The most frequently used themes of only child studies were intra-personal themes. Moreover, research reporting no differences between only children and sibling children were the most commonly observed, with the exception of inter-personal themes.
