Maternal Perceived Social Support and Parental Involvement and Their Children's Cognitive Development

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of perceived maternal social support and parental involvement inchildren's cognitive development in low income families and whether these relationships are mediated byparental involvement. Data were collected from the Data of Index Studies for Korean Child andAdolescent's Development of 2009. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's Correlation and StructuralEquation Modeling (SEM). The results indicated that perceived maternal social support was positivelyrelated to maternal involvement in child care, educational play, leisure activities and children’s cognitivedevelopment. Maternal involvement in child care, educational play, and leisure activities were positivelyrelated to children's cognitive development. The levels of perceived maternal social support was found tohave an indirect effect on early cognitive development as mediated by maternal involvement, such as thequality of care, cognitive stimulation, and playful leisure activities.
