Subjective Sense of Calling in Childrearing Scale (SSCCS) Using Item Response Theory

Abstract

This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Subjective Sense of Calling in Childrearing Scale (SSCCS) using the graded response model (GRM) of item response theory (IRT). Single-group IRT analyses were conducted on data from 1,470 South Korean parents (mean age = 46.89 years, SD = 9.70, 529 fathers, 941 mothers). Results from the item parameter and information function estimations showed that all items had moderate to very high discrimination. For category threshold difficulty parameters, items related to constant child awareness (items 7-9) and passionate parenting as personal growth (items 10-11) were very easy to endorse. In a relative comparison within groups, awareness factor items (7-9) showed low discrimination and information in the female group but higher discrimination and adequate information in the male group, suggesting possible differences in how parenting experiences are perceived. This study enhances understanding of the SSCCS by applying a more rigorous psychometric method than classical test theory (CTT) and proposes modifications for items measuring high levels of child awareness.
