The Perceptions and Needs of Mother\'s in terms of Elementary School-Age Child Care: A Focus on the Working Mother

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions and needs of working mothers with childrenunder 10 years in terms of School-Age Child Care(SACC). The research subjects comprised 238 workingmothers. The major findings of this study are as follow: First, working mothers believe in the necessity ofSACC and working mothers with children attending SACC appear to be satisfied with the SACC. Second,working mothers do not appear to want before-school programs but want or require after-school programs.Third, working mothers with children attending SACC want care and study base-programs. Fourth,working mothers also desire both weekend and vacation programs. Fifth, working mothers also prefer ordesire that the teachers of school-age child care programs are university graduates. Based on the results ofthis study, it appears necessary to further develop school age chid care programs. Based on the results ofthis study, there appears to be a strong need for both long- and short-term policy aimed at thestandardization of school age child care teachers\' qualifications and the their status and working conditions.
