Mother's Over-protectiveness and Adolescent' Anxiety - The Effects of Mediation on Adolescent' Autonomy -

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety. In orderto expand the scope of our study of this relationship, special attention was paid to the possible effects ofmediation on adolescent' autonomy. The subjects consisted of 252 1st and 2nd graders of middle school(147 boys and 105 girls) residing in Chung Nam Dajeon city in South Korea. It was found that thelevels of a mother's over-protectiveness were negatively related to adolescent' autonomy, and anxiety to asignificant degree. Adolescent' autonomy was found to be a significant mediator in the relationshipbetween a mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety. These findings indicate that adolescent'autonomy may function as a pathway between a mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety.
