The Effects of Mother's Psychological and Behavioral Control on Young Children's Problem Behaviors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mother's psychological control and behavioralcontrol on young children's problem behaviors according to their age. The subjects of this study comprised238 mothers whose young children were between 3 and 5-years of age and attending 2 privatekindergartens and 4 child-care centers located in Chunan and Ansung. Data were analyzed by means offrequency, percentage, Primary factor analysis, Cronbach's α, t-test, Pearson's correlation, hierarchicalregression using the SPSS 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follows: First, there was asignificant difference in mother's psychological control according to the age of the children. Second, amother's psychological control had significant effects on all kinds of the children's problem behaviors whichwere studied. In particular, a mother's psychological control had a stronger effect on aggression in 3 yearsold children than that in 5 year old children. Third, a mother's behavioral control had a significant effecton aggression and withdrawal exhibited by 5 year old children. It was found that a mother's psychologicalcontrol had negative effects on children's problem behavior while behavioral control had positive effects onwithdrawal and fear. Fourth, the interaction effect of a mother's psychological control and behavioralcontrol was significant for depression and anxiety amongst 5 year old children and withdrawal amongst 3year old children.
