The effects of AAC through familiar photograph for Autistic Spectrum Children\'s selecting activities, language development and behavior problems

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) using familiar photograph for preschool Autistic Spectrum Disorders(ASD). Three participants with ASD were non-verbal and exhibited non-compliant behavior problems such as temper-tantrum, ignoring direction, and crying. Employing a multiple-baseline across subjects design, a therapist evaluated the rate of activity selection, behavior problems, forms of communication, and level of receptive communication. The AAC training procedure was conducted in a lab that consisted of five active areas: art, snack, craft, bowling, and toy train areas. In an area, the children were guided to choose an activity photo they want to do. If a child did not initiate photo selection, the therapist provided physical and verbal cues. When the children successfully chose an activity photo, they were allowed to do the activity they chose. During intervention, the participants improved the rates of activity selection, and their communication functions, as well as reducing behavior problems. They also showed higher rates of maintenance at the follow-up sessions that were conducted 6 weeks after intervention.
