Development and Initial Validation of the Korean Parenting Inventory

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an adolescent version of the Korean Parenting Inventory (KPI) from the indigenous perspective. The subjects were 780 students in middle and high schools located in Seoul, Incheon and Kyunggi-do. The paternal data and the maternal data were analyzed respectively by descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, Pearson\'s product moment correlations and exploratory factor analyses. Based on theoretical and psychometric grounds, 30 items for paternal behaviors and 32 items for maternal behaviors were selected. The item discriminant coefficients, Cramer\'s V ranged from .29 to .76. And the four common factors of the Korean parenting were distrust, lessons, respect and attention. Moreover, the KPI\'s four common subscales had sufficient concurrent validity as well as construct validity and showed adequate internal consistency, split-half reliability and test-retest reliability. The results provided initial support for the reliability and validity of the KPI. The implications of these results and suggestions for future research are discussed.
