The Perception of Factors Influencing the Level and Cause of Happiness among Adults: With a Specific Focus on Family, Work and Leisure Life

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine factors influencing the level and cause of happiness among adults, focusing on the family, work and leisure life and their overall happiness. This study analyzes the influence of occupational achievement, socio-economic status, and the academic achievement of their children on the level and cause of happiness. A total of 1,970 adults (male=985, female=985) completed a questionnaire developed by the first two authors. The results are as follows. Overall, respondents reported being happy, especially in their family life. Second, respondents with higher levels of occupational achievement, socio-economic status and academic achievement of their children reported higher scores on happiness in their family, work, and leisure life and their overall happiness. Third, multiple regression analyses indicate that occupational achievement was the most important predictor of overall happiness, followed by socio-economic status and academic achievement of their children. Fourth, respondents reported that they were happy in their family life when there was harmony in the family, when their child was born, and when family members were successful. For occupational life, respondents reported that they were happy when they were able to succeed in their work, when attaining financial security, when they were recognized by their colleagues, and when they were promoted. For leisure life, respondents reported that they were happy when they were able to spend time with their family members, and when they were engaged in their hobby and sport activities. Overall, a majority of the respondents were happy when there was harmony in the family, when their child was born and seeing them grow, and when they had good health.
