A Study of Identity Style: With a Focus on Identity Status and Happenstance Skills

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Berzonsky's identity style andMarcia’s identity status||| and to understand how identity style was related to happenstance skills. Inaddition||| we investigated the distribution of identity style by identity status in term of the level ofcommitment. A total of 474 college students (263 male and 211 female students) participated in thestudy. The participants completed questionnaires on identity style||| identity status||| and happenstance skills.The results were as follows. First||| there were significant relationships between norm-oriented identitystyle and other identity styles. However||| there was no discernible relationship between norm-oriented anddiffuse/avoidance-oriented identity style. Second||| there were significant gender differences in terms ofthe distribution of identity style. Third||| there were significant distinctions in terms of the frequencybetween identity style and identity status. Fourth||| in foreclosure and diffusion status||| there weresignificant differences in terms of the distribution of identity style depending on their commitment level.Fifth||| college students with order information-oriented||| norm-oriented||| and diffuse/avoidance-oriented identitystyles reported higher scores on happenstance skills. Through this research||| we found the importance ofcareer identity style in identity studies and identified new guidelines for future career counseling.
