A Review of Research on Relational Aggression in Korea (2000-2013)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the recent trends of research on relational aggression inKorea. Ninety seven documents including journal articles, thesis and dissertations published from 2000 to2013 in Korea were reviewed in terms of the researchers’ academic backgrounds, participants, researchmethodology (data collection, data analysis, instruments), main variables, and results, amongst otherconsiderations. These studies were summarized into several categories as follows. First, most of the researchwas carried out by researchers in the field of education. Second, research in this area has been intensivesince 2010, compared to the early 2000s. Third, many studies targeted students in elementary school,followed by children, and then students in middle school. Fourth, self-reporting measures usingquestionnaires were the most commonly used tools in the studies followed by interview methods andparticipant observations. Fifth, regression analysis was the most commonly used data analysis method.However, qualitative analysis was utilized in 2007 and the structural equation modeling method has beenused since 2011. Sixth, the major variables in the research were firstly related to emotional developmentfollowed by family relationships. The implications of the research results were also discussed.
